Ebuka slams BBNaija Season 11 housemates’ slow start

The reality show host says contestants are waiting for events to unfold instead of creating memorable moments during their opening week

Big Brother Naija host Ebuka Obi-Uchendu has delivered a blunt assessment of the Season 11 housemates, criticising what he described as a lack of energy and initiative during the reality show’s opening week.

Ebuka made the remarks during Sunday night’s live show, telling the contestants that too many of them appeared to be waiting for events to happen rather than taking the initiative and creating memorable moments as the competition entered its second week.

The host said he initially believed the housemates were simply adjusting to their unfamiliar surroundings and expected their energy levels to improve as they settled into the Big Brother Naija house.

“Too many of you were just not there. I thought it was just day two and you all were trying to acclimatise,” Ebuka said.

However, the host said his concerns grew after observing the contestants’ preparations for their wager task, which he described as lacklustre.

“Then the wager task happened, but the build-up to it was lackadaisical, especially from the ladies. I did not want to think too much of it,” he added.

Ebuka said the pool party, another major opportunity for the contestants to showcase their personalities and build connections with viewers, also failed to deliver the excitement expected of the housemates.

“But then, I watched the pool party. It was more like I did not watch it because I went to bed at some point. It was not just it,” he said.

The criticism amounted to a powerful wake-up call for the contestants, who are now expected to become more active as the season gathers momentum.

Ebuka urged the housemates to stop waiting for dramatic moments to emerge on their own and instead take responsibility for shaping their experience inside the house.

“I have been trying to find the word to describe the week, and I think the right word to use is that there are so many of you waiting for things to happen, and not many of you are making things happen,” he said.

His assessment comes at an early but potentially crucial stage of the competition.

The opening weeks of Big Brother Naija often provide contestants with an opportunity to establish their identities, form relationships and build a connection with the viewing public.

For the Season 11 housemates, Ebuka’s remarks signal that simply remaining in the background may not be enough as the competition intensifies.

With the show now moving into its second week, the contestants will have to respond to the challenge by bringing more personality, initiative and energy to the house if they are to leave a lasting impression on viewers.
