Ebola: Ogun clears 111 travellers after surveillance

The Ogun State Government has confirmed that 111 travellers from Ebola high-risk countries have completed medical surveillance, with no case of the virus detected in the state.

The state government made this known on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, amid heightened health surveillance following the Federal Government’s confirmation of an imported Ebola case in Abuja.

Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, said the 111 persons of interest had been identified, monitored and discharged from follow-up after completing the required surveillance period.

Coker said the state had strengthened its preparedness measures to prevent the spread of Ebola following outbreaks reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other African countries.

She explained that the state’s Public Health Emergency Operations Centre was coordinating surveillance, early detection and response activities to ensure suspected cases were quickly identified and appropriately managed.

The commissioner added that disease surveillance officers, port health officials, clinicians and other healthcare workers had undergone training to improve Ogun’s capacity to respond to any suspected Ebola case.

Coker urged residents to remain vigilant but avoid panic, stressing that no Ebola infection had been confirmed in Ogun as of Wednesday.

The state’s heightened alert followed the Federal Government’s confirmation of an imported Ebola case involving a woman who recently arrived in Abuja from Uganda.

Health authorities have identified 44 contacts linked to the confirmed patient and commenced monitoring as part of efforts to prevent further transmission.

Coker said common symptoms of Ebola include fever, severe weakness, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.

She added that unexplained bleeding could occur in some cases, while symptoms may develop between two and 21 days after exposure.

The commissioner advised anyone who may have been exposed to the virus and develops symptoms to contact health authorities promptly.

She also urged residents to maintain good personal hygiene, avoid contact with the bodily fluids of suspected Ebola patients and refrain from spreading unverified information.

Coker directed public and private healthcare facilities across Ogun to promptly isolate and report suspected cases to the appropriate authorities.

She assured residents that the state government would continue working with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and other relevant agencies to strengthen surveillance and preparedness.
