Desmond Elliot returns to Nollywood after APC primary loss

Desmond Elliot, actor and three term member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has returned to Nollywood after failing to secure the All Progressives Congress nomination to seek another term representing Surulere Constituency I in the 2027 general election.

Images and videos circulating on social media show Elliot on the set of a new film alongside acclaimed actor Ibrahim Chatta.

The pair were seen discussing scenes between takes, signalling Elliot’s latest professional move after several years focused largely on legislative duties.

The return has been warmly received by many film enthusiasts, with social media users expressing excitement about seeing one of Nollywood’s familiar faces back in front of the camera.

The online reactions became an unexpected highlight of the development, reflecting Elliot’s enduring popularity among audiences despite his years in public office.

Elliot’s return to acting follows a significant moment in his political career.

The lawmaker recently lost the APC primary election for the Surulere Constituency I seat to fellow party member Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, who secured victory by a wide margin ahead of the 2027 polls.

Although Elliot has not publicly linked the political setback to his renewed acting career, the timing has drawn considerable public interest. Neither Elliot nor Ibrahim Chatta had released details of the film project as of the time of publication.

Before entering politics, Elliot built a successful career as one of Nollywood’s most recognisable actors, featuring in and directing numerous productions over more than two decades.

The entertainer transitioned into elective politics in 2015 when he won election to the Lagos State House of Assembly under the APC platform.

Elliot subsequently secured re-election twice, serving three consecutive terms while maintaining limited involvement in film production.

The latest development illustrates a career that has alternated between entertainment and public service, a path taken by several Nigerian entertainers who have ventured into politics before returning to the creative industry.

With filming now under way, attention is likely to shift to Elliot’s first major screen appearance since stepping back into Nollywood.

Fans will also be watching to see whether the return marks a temporary project or the beginning of a broader comeback to the industry where he first established his public profile.
