Davido opens up on how his father inspired his name

Afrobeats star Davido shares how his stage name emerged and recounts early struggles with his father over music

Davido, an award-winning Afrobeats star, has revealed that his stage name was unknowingly created by his father, billionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke, during his childhood.

The singer disclosed this in a now-viral video, explaining that his father often shouted his name in a distinct way whenever he wanted to call him.

Davido said his childhood behaviour frequently drew his father’s attention. He explained that the repeated call, “David-o! Davido-o!”, eventually evolved into the globally recognised name he now uses.

“My dad gave me the name Davido. I was very stubborn as a kid, so whenever he wanted to call me, he’d shout ‘Davido-o!’ That’s how the name stuck,” he said.

The revelation has sparked fresh conversations among fans, many of whom described the story as both humorous and relatable.

Beyond the name, Davido also opened up about early resistance to his music career.

In a separate interview, he said his father initially opposed his decision to pursue music, even as his popularity began to grow.

He recalled a moment when his father became aware of his rising fame after seeing a billboard bearing his image and hearing reports that his songs were dominating clubs.

Despite this, the singer said his father remained determined to redirect his path.

He alleged that, at one point, his father ordered the arrest of his girlfriend and a show promoter in a bid to pressure him into abandoning music.

According to Davido, the directive was that they should not be released until he agreed to quit. The claim has not been publicly addressed by his father.

Over time, however, the relationship evolved, and Davido went on to become one of Africa’s most successful music exports.

His journey reflects both personal resilience and the complex dynamics often seen between ambition and parental expectations.
