N90 fuel relief: Dangote refinery reshapes petrol prices

Nigerian filling stations in Abuja and surrounding areas have reduced petrol pump prices by as much as N90 per litre in the three weeks, following Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s N50 reduction in its ex-depot petrol price.

The latest adjustments have seen major retailers including MRS, NNPC Limited, AA Rano, NIPCO and Emedab lower their pump prices to between N1,210 and N1,275 per litre, compared with N1,305 to N1,335 recorded at some outlets on July 31.

The reductions represent a notable shift in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum market, where retail prices have continued to respond to movements in refinery and depot prices.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery announced on August 5 that it would reduce its ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol, from N1,215 to N1,165 per litre.

The N50 reduction took effect on August 6 and was accompanied by an N80 cut in the refinery’s diesel price, from N1,650 to N1,570 per litre.

The refinery said the adjustment was intended to improve energy affordability, increase access to refined petroleum products and support economic activity.

“The refinery remains committed to ensuring stable supply while leveraging operational efficiencies to deliver value to consumers, businesses and stakeholders,” the Dangote Group said in announcing the reduction.

The impact has since filtered through parts of the retail market.

By August 12, NNPC filling stations in Abuja had reduced petrol prices from about N1,299 to N1,250 per litre, while some MRS outlets had also lowered their prices by between N25 and N50 per litre.

The latest figures indicate that the response has continued, with some filling stations now selling petrol within the N1,210 to N1,275 range.

For motorists, the difference is significant.

A N90 reduction translates to N4,500 less for a 50-litre purchase, although the actual saving depends on the outlet and the quantity purchased.

The price movement also comes against a complicated international backdrop.

Despite the domestic reductions, global crude prices remained elevated, with Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate trading at levels that continue to influence the cost of refined petroleum products.

The Nigerian downstream market has also experienced considerable price volatility in recent months.

Dangote Refinery had reduced its petrol ex-depot price to N1,075 per litre in early July, following several downward adjustments.

That relief was followed by a sharp reversal as international crude prices rose.

By late July, the refinery’s petrol price had moved back towards N1,215 per litre, highlighting the sensitivity of domestic fuel prices to crude oil costs.

The subsequent August reduction has therefore offered fresh relief to consumers, although analysts and motorists remain exposed to further changes in crude prices, refining costs, logistics and competition among suppliers.

Dangote Refinery’s growing influence has also altered the competitive dynamics of Nigeria’s downstream sector.

As domestic refining capacity expands and marketers have greater access to locally refined petrol, changes in ex-depot prices can increasingly translate into adjustments at retail stations.

Market data from mid-August showed Dangote among the cheapest major petrol depots in Lagos, with other operators including MRS and NIPCO also competing closely on depot prices.

The trend suggests that competition, rather than a single factor, is increasingly shaping pump prices.

Retailers must balance acquisition costs with transportation, operating expenses, location and margins before setting prices for motorists.

The latest cuts therefore offer welcome relief but do not necessarily signal a permanent downward trend.

With international crude prices still capable of moving sharply and Nigeria’s downstream market continuing to adjust to domestic refining, motorists may see further changes in the weeks ahead.

For now, however, the combination of Dangote Refinery’s lower ex-depot price and competitive responses from filling stations has delivered a modest but meaningful reduction in petrol costs for some Nigerian consumers.
