Opinion: Olokola Lost Again! Why Dapo Abiodun Must Answer to Ogun East

Dangote Olokola Investment sparks debate as critics question Governor Dapo Abiodun over lost economic opportunities for Ogun East

The announcement by billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote that he is returning to the Olokola axis with a multi-billion-dollar industrial investment should ordinarily be a moment of celebration for the people of Ogun East.

Instead, it has become another painful reminder of how Ogun State continues to watch strategic opportunities slip away under Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration.

For many stakeholders across Ogun East, the question is simple: How did a project originally conceived around the Olokola Free Trade Zone end up benefiting Ondo State while Ogun State once again watches from the sidelines?

This is not the first time such a development has occurred.

Many Nigerians still remember that the Dangote Refinery, now one of Africa’s largest industrial projects, was initially linked to the Olokola Free Trade Zone before the investment eventually found a home in Lagos.

At the time, Dapo Abiodun was a key figure associated with the Olokola Free Trade Zone project.

Today, history appears to be repeating itself.

While Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is celebrating the return of Dangote with a bigger and more ambitious investment package, Ogun State is left to explain why a project that should naturally have strengthened the economy of Ogun East is now being championed elsewhere.

The implications are enormous.

Thousands of potential jobs, massive industrial development, increased economic activities, rising property values, improved infrastructure and countless business opportunities that could have transformed communities within Ogun East are now set to flow largely in another direction.

The irony is difficult to ignore.

At a time Governor Dapo Abiodun is being mentioned in political discussions surrounding the Ogun East Senatorial District, many residents are asking whether a leader under whose watch such strategic opportunities slipped away deserves promotion to the Senate.

Leadership is ultimately measured by results.

The people of Ogun East have every right to ask what happened to Olokola. They have every right to ask why the state failed to secure and maximise one of the most significant investment opportunities in its history.

They also have every right to demand accountability from those who occupied positions of authority when these decisions were made.

No amount of political branding can erase the reality that while Ondo is preparing for a multi-billion-dollar industrial revolution, Ogun East is once again left wondering what might have been.

As the political battle for 2027 gradually takes shape, the Olokola question may become one of the defining issues before the electorate.

For many voters, the issue is no longer about promises or political slogans. It is about tangible results, economic opportunities and leadership effectiveness.

On Olokola, many believe Governor Dapo Abiodun still owes Ogun East some answers.
