Cross River distances itself from South-South Governors’ rejection of emergency rule in Rivers, aligning with Tinubu’s peace efforts

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Cross River State Government has distanced itself from the South-South Governors’ Forum’s opposition to a proposed emergency rule in Rivers State, affirming its full support for President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to restore peace and stability in the oil-rich state.

Acting Governor Dr. Peter Odey, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Ekpong, clarified that Cross River was not consulted before the forum, led by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, publicly opposed the emergency rule.

“The position of the forum does not reflect the views of the government of Cross River, which fully aligns with the decision of Mr. President, taken in the best interest of national security, peace, and stability,” Odey stated.

He further emphasised that protecting lives and property remains a top priority for any responsible government.

“Where circumstances necessitate decisive action, such measures should be supported for the greater good of our democracy and national unity,” he added.

Cross River reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional governance and pledged to continue collaborating with the federal government to ensure peace and security across the nation.

Similarly, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has also dissociated himself from the forum’s stance, indicating a division among South-South governors regarding the emergency rule in Rivers.
