73-year-old man remanded over alleged sexual abuse of 15-year-old

An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo has ordered the remand of Olarenwaju Hamid, a 73-year-old man, over allegations of sexual abuse involving a 15-year-old girl and an alleged attempt to procure an illegal abortion.

Hamid was brought before the court on Wednesday on a two-count charge of unlawful carnal knowledge and attempting to procure an abortion. His plea was not taken during the proceedings.

The prosecutor, Saheed Abiodun, told the court that the alleged offences occurred in March at Idi-Ori, Abeokuta.

Abiodun alleged that Hamid, who was the caregiver to the teenager, had sexual relations with the girl on several occasions, resulting in pregnancy.

The prosecutor further told the court that the defendant allegedly attempted to terminate the pregnancy by offering the teenager N50,000 for an abortion.

Following the allegations, Abiodun applied for an order to keep the defendant in custody for 60 days pending advice from the Ogun State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

He told the court that the alleged offences violated provisions of Section 32 of the Child’s Rights Law and Section 228 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

Magistrate A.K. Araba granted the application and ordered that Hamid be remanded at the Oba Correctional Service Centre pending further legal advice from the DPP.

The court adjourned the matter until September 14, 2026, for mention.

The prosecution is expected to receive guidance from the DPP before the case proceeds further.

Cases involving alleged abuse of minors have continued to attract attention from child protection advocates, who have called for stronger reporting systems and swift legal action against suspected offenders.

However, the allegations against Hamid remain claims before the court, and he is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
