Clarity is priceless… Who buys what they don’t understand?

When founders build something remarkable that doesn’t get the anticipated traction, they often blame the market, the economy, timing and even the competition.

They spend money on campaigns, tactics, and channels, without realising the problem is that people are oblivious to what they’ve built. It’s surprising how many businesses cannot, in a simple sentence, articulate what they do and why someone should care.

Clarity is the deliberate act of lessening the noise (information overload or fluff) without losing nuance. In practical terms, the less noise, the more clarity.

An attempt to convey everything at once sets in cognitive overload, which is inimical to retention.

A confused mind never converts. Removing the noise so the core message shines through makes all the difference.

You’ve definitely lost the prospect when your messaging is that “We help businesses of all sizes with everything digital.” This can’t compare to simply saying “We help X achieve Y without Z.” People must understand what you offer, why it matters to them, and what they should do next. If audiences understand you, they’ll remember you when the need arises. Clarity is the best regard you can accord your audience, and a befitting reward for their attention.

There’s No Positioning or Strategy without Clarity

Willy-nilly, you cannot talk about positioning and strategy without a prominent mention of clarity. It remains the undisputed subtext of both key concepts.

Take positioning, for instance: the fact that this mental real estate highlights what makes your company or message meaningfully distinct from alternative voices in the industry highlights the indispensability of clarity.

Being good at something is different from being understood for something. Your market must have a clear reason to remember you.

Positioning is the strategic process of shaping how your business is understood, remembered, and chosen over the competition. It influences who notices, trusts, compares you with competitors, and ultimately, who opts to patronise you.

None of this will happen if there’s any scintilla of opacity about the brand promise. Strong positioning creates a clear space in the customer’s mind, telling them who you are, who you serve, what problem you solve, and why your approach is unique.

Strategy, on the other hand, defines where an organisation intends to go, the choices to be made, the position it seeks to create, and what it will deliberately not pursue.

Clarity feeds strategy with the challenges consistently faced by customers and the outcomes they care about.

With this feed, the company is able to speak with confidence, act with coherence and resonate where it really matters.

Clarity is the lever for strategy, given that a business entering a new market won’t deploy the same tactics as one focused on increasing revenue from existing customers.

It is the same way a company launching a new service would require a different approach from one trying to strengthen customer retention.

The company seeking to reduce its dependence on several major clients will need different audiences, messages and channels from one focused on improving profitability.

Clarity transforms strategy from a management document into a shared meaning. Without it, strategic priorities can become competing initiatives as targets get different interpretations. Critical decisions will lose alignment with the organisation’s intended direction.

Where strategy provides direction, clarity makes internal teams uniformly take that direction without checking in.

Strategy creates value only when people understand it clearly. This is why the organisation must clearly answer: Where are we going? Why are we going there? What choices will we make? What will we stop or avoid? And what does this mean for me and my work?

A Business Can’t Outspend Obfuscation

Confusion is one of the most expensive costs that an organisation can incur. There have been instances where companies with genuinely strong products lose mouthwatering deals because their pitch deck opened with jargon that mentally tunes off the prospect right before the demo began. People don’t patronise what they do not comprehend.

You can imagine an organisation spending fortunes increasing awareness of a proposition that nobody can explain. You can have a million impressions yet zero understanding; a million clicks yet zilch conversions. You cannot buzz or buy your way out of a fundamentally unclear business.

Confused customers don’t belabour themselves trying to figure out a brand; they simply move on since they are spoilt for choice. It takes clarity to understand the issues so as to adopt and adequately apply the appropriate tactics.

Without the shared filter that clarity is, every decision inside the organisation becomes a negotiation with each call relitigated by whoever’s in the room.

Despite being led by a visionary team with well-defined goals and a strong strategy, a business will be losing so much when employees don’t understand:

  • Why executive decisions matter
  • What they mean for them
  • The new course of action they should undertake

Internal teams must clearly understand the why, the what, and the how of business intent to become a part of it.

It’s Editing, Not Addition, that Delivers Clarity

In line with the definition stated earlier, it takes editing to lessen noise without losing nuance. In other words, clarity answers to sifting, not issuing more information in the name of explanation.

Editing is critically required for a brand with too many channels, too much ad spend, conveys too many ideas, yet without enough focus. Saying more can’t make up for the lapses in clarity.

The value of editing isn’t in what gets removed or added. It comes in the form of retaining what works, severing what causes friction, refining what promises potential and prioritising what is most important.

A client can see 20 new posts without taking into consideration the eleven things you stopped them from doing, although that is where the confusion was cleared. The value is real, and it arrives as an absence, which is a difficult thing to invoice.

Effective messaging isn’t about saying everything, but ensuring the right audiences understand the right message at the right time.

When the messaging is spot on, customers can spot pain points they had lacked words to describe.

They get to situate your solutions and appreciate the value, causing them to act as expected. Beyond hastening execution, clear communication clears confusion and fights friction.

Clarity Also Valued By Generative AI

A substantial part of public relations tactics involves tasks that large language models (LLMs) can now accelerate: researching topics, structuring information, adapting content for different channels and preparing first drafts. But these require human input that’s driven by clear thinking.

Remember GIGO? The good old garbage-in-garbage-out fundamental of computer studies also finds expression in agentic copy and content writing.

If your prompt isn’t clear enough, the generative machine won’t provide an impressive result. For instance, if prompted to “Write me a LinkedIn post,” ChatGPT will definitely come up with a draft after filling every gap for itself.

That is where generic assumptions enter the equation. Your content pillars can’t be based on random AI-generated ideas, existing keyword lists, or assumed interesting topics, yet expect your business to be featured when buyers ask AI for recommendations.

Engines require the business context that they cannot know unless included in the brief. When engaging agentic tools, your prompt must detail:

  • Who the writing is meant for and already available information
  • Rare perspective they need to understand
  • Facts, links, examples and citations
  • Appropriate tone and phraseology to avoid
  • Platform, length, call to action and what must not be improvised.

Bored of polished content explaining familiar topics, people are looking for orientation. They want to understand what matters, what has changed, and what they should consider next.

Clarity is therefore required in terms of customer experience, market knowledge, proprietary data, expert perspectives, or simply a well-founded point of view.

AI can generate volume but cannot make up for the judgment that comes from knowing your customers and what genuinely moves them.

When it comes to answer engines, a keyword can tell you what someone searched, but the question behind it exposes what decision the buyer is actually trying to make. A prompt can represent different buyer moments and motivations.

The same query can mean learn, compare, or buy, and the content should shift with it. Cramming all queries into one stage of the buyer journey hurts clarity. Understanding real user questions before creating content is what improves visibility in both Google search and AI search.

Content will be genuinely meaningful and much more likely to influence decisions when there is a shift from keyword-focused content to conversation-focused strategy.

The Hack to Creating Clarity

This has to do with plotting tension and planting questions in the minds of audiences. At the point of denouement, the message you’re trying to pass across will be as clear as crystal.

How it goes is to open the messaging with curiosity (something unresolved) so that the audience will have a question lingering in their minds.

Don’t rush to resolve the rattle, but add tension to mix. Use instances to make the narrative pull them through one line at a time. This will definitely add to their list of questions.

Locking audiences in this state of suspended animation, where they are eager to know what comes next, exercises their brains, making them agile enough to comprehend the point you are trying to make when the suspense gets cleared.

This formula applies to all forms of messaging. It makes even not-so-clear information stick. That’s the reason to stay!
