Chelsea suffer a painful defeat to Newcastle as Anthony Gordon’s goal at Stamford Bridge dents their top-four hopes in the Premier League

Chelsea’s hopes of securing a top-four finish suffered a damaging setback after Anthony Gordon scored the decisive goal in a narrow victory for Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.

The defeat compounded a painful week for Chelsea, who had already endured a heavy 5–2 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie.

Liam Rosenior’s side fell behind in the 18th minute when Tino Livramento threaded a pass that allowed Joe Willock to surge forward before setting up Gordon, who finished calmly.

Chelsea remain fifth in the Premier League table but now trail Aston Villa and Manchester United by three points, having played one match more than both rivals in the race for Champions League qualification.

Elsewhere, Brighton and Hove Albion secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Sunderland to move into the top half of the table.

Yankuba Minteh scored the decisive goal when his effort slipped past goalkeeper Melker Ellborg at the near post. The result lifted Brighton above Sunderland on goal difference into tenth place.

Sunderland, who were unbeaten in their first 11 home matches after returning to the top flight, have now lost their last three games at the Stadium of Light, dropping to 12th in the standings.

At Turf Moor, Burnley and Bournemouth played out a goalless draw that offered little relief to either side. The result leaves Burnley eight points adrift of safety with eight matches remaining, intensifying their relegation battle.

Bournemouth remain ninth in the table, three points behind Brentford in the race for what could prove to be the final European qualification place in seventh.
