Australia stun Turkey with a 2-0 World Cup victory as Nestory Irankunda, Connor Metcalfe and goalkeeper Patrick Beach inspire the Socceroos

Australia produced one of the biggest surprises of the FIFA World Cup so far as Tony Popovic’s side defeated Turkey 2-0 in their Group D opener at BC Place Stadium on Saturday.

Goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe, coupled with an outstanding performance from rookie goalkeeper Patrick Beach, secured a famous victory for the Socceroos against a highly-rated Turkish side.

The result vindicated a series of bold decisions by Australia coach Tony Popovic, who dropped experienced captain and goalkeeper Maty Ryan in favour of Beach, who was making only his third international appearance.

Popovic also left vice-captain Jackson Irvine on the bench, opting instead for 21-year-old midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler in a youthful starting line-up featuring 10 World Cup debutants.

The decision proved inspired as Australia Stun Turkey became the defining storyline of the match.

Turkey entered the tournament with high expectations, returning to the World Cup for the first time since their impressive third-place finish at the 2002 competition.

Boasting several players with experience in elite European football, the Turks dominated possession and created numerous opportunities but failed to break down Australia’s disciplined defence.

One of Turkey’s earliest chances came in the 27th minute when Arda Guler unleashed a powerful effort that forced Beach into a smart save.

Moments later, Australia struck.

Beach launched a long pass to Okon-Engstler, whose perfectly delivered ball split the Turkish defence and sent Irankunda racing clear on goal.

The winger controlled brilliantly before firing a low finish past the goalkeeper to give Australia the lead.

Irankunda celebrated by recreating the iconic corner-flag boxing routine made famous by former Australia captain Tim Cahill.

Turkey almost equalised three minutes later when Abdulkerim Bardakci thundered a long-range effort towards goal. However, Beach produced another remarkable save, getting just enough of a touch to divert the shot onto the post.

The Australian goalkeeper continued his commanding display after the break, notably denying another dangerous effort from Guler with a sharp save from a free-kick in the 57th minute.

As Turkey pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Australia remained dangerous on the counterattack.

The decisive moment arrived in the 75th minute when Metcalfe collected possession in midfield, drove forward with purpose and unleashed a superb strike from 25 yards that found the back of the net.

The powerful finish effectively sealed the result and completed a stunning upset against one of the tournament’s fancied sides.

Beach’s heroics between the posts ensured Turkey’s frustration continued until the final whistle, with the goalkeeper emerging as one of the standout performers of the opening round of matches.

The victory leaves Australia level on three points with United States men’s national soccer team at the top of Group D.

Attention now turns to a crucial showdown between the two sides in Seattle on Friday, with top spot in the group potentially at stake.

For Australia, however, the immediate focus will be on celebrating a memorable night in Vancouver after a fearless performance that demonstrated resilience, tactical discipline and belief on football’s biggest stage.
