The Academic Staff Union of Universities declared a total and indefinite strike across the three universities owned by the Lagos State Government after a 14-day ultimatum expired.

The affected institutions are Lagos State University, Lagos State University of Education, and Lagos State University of Science and Technology.

The ASUU Joint Campus Group said the action took effect immediately because the state government had not addressed the union’s demands.

The union issued the 14-day ultimatum on 31 August and repeated a final warning on 10 September, asking the Lagos State Government to act before a 13 September deadline.

According to the union, that deadline passed without meaningful negotiations or a concrete plan.

ASUU said its main demand was the full domestication and implementation, in Lagos State-owned universities, of the December 2025 agreement between the union and the Federal Government.

The union said that agreement includes the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and welfare provisions for serving and retired academic staff.

The union said it took the decision with concern for students, parents and the academic calendar, but argued that continued inaction had left no other course.

ASUU urged students to remain calm and law-abiding, and asked parents and guardians to understand the action as an attempt to secure a more stable, better funded university system.

ASUU commended the administrations of the three universities for work towards domestication of the agreement and said the strike was not aimed at university managements.

The union also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, alumni associations, civil society groups and other stakeholders to support improved funding and working conditions.

The union said the strike had the backing of its national leadership, including letters to university managements, governing councils and the Visitor, as well as the 14-day ultimatum.

ASUU accused the Lagos State Government of failing to follow other states whose governors had moved to settle similar disputes.

The strike will remain in force, the union said, until talks produce a satisfactory settlement and the Lagos State Government signs, domesticates and fully implements the applicable parts of the 2025 agreement.

ASUU said it remained open to constructive dialogue and would restore normal academic activities once the outstanding issues were resolved.
