Arsenal made a commanding start to their title defence as Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard secured a convincing victory in Cardiff

Mikel Arteta and Arsenal began the 2026/27 campaign in emphatic fashion at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday, August 16, defeating Manchester City 3-0 to win the Community Shield and send an early warning ahead of their Premier League title defence.

Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard scored as the Premier League champions produced a confident performance against Manchester City, the reigning FA Cup holders.

The result gave Arsenal an early piece of silverware and extended their unbeaten record against City in Community Shield meetings.

Arsenal had previously beaten City on penalties in the 2023 edition after a 1-1 draw.

Arsenal needed barely half a minute to establish their authority. Calafiori struck after 24.5 seconds following a clever contribution from Myles Lewis-Skelly, producing the fastest goal in Community Shield history.

The early goal immediately unsettled City and gave Arteta’s side the platform to dictate the contest.

Havertz doubled Arsenal’s advantage in the 28th minute, heading home after a well-worked move involving new signing Christos Tzolis.

The Greek winger was one of several summer arrivals to make a notable impression in Cardiff.

Tzolis continued to influence the match after the interval, setting up Ødegaard for Arsenal’s third goal three minutes into the second half.

At the other end, David Raya played an important role in preserving Arsenal’s clean sheet.

The goalkeeper produced key interventions, including a save to deny Phil Foden as City attempted to find a route back into the contest.

Manchester City struggled to reproduce the control that has characterised much of their recent success.

The defeat also marked a difficult competitive debut for Enzo Maresca, who succeeded Pep Guardiola as City’s manager.

Maresca’s appointment represents the beginning of a new era at City following Guardiola’s departure, making the Community Shield an important first test of the club’s transition.

Arsenal, by contrast, looked settled and purposeful.

New recruits Bruno Guimarães and Tzolis contributed to a side that appeared particularly sharp in possession and attack, while the established core provided the structure for Arteta’s approach.

The victory also carried a special significance for Cardiff. The Community Shield returned to the Principality Stadium for the first time in 20 years after Wembley was made unavailable because of pre-planned concerts.

The stadium had previously hosted the fixture six times between 2001 and 2006.

The relocation gave the traditional curtain-raiser a distinctive setting, while the meeting between the reigning Premier League champions and FA Cup winners provided a familiar contest at the top of English football.

For Arsenal, however, the occasion ultimately belonged to the players.

Calafiori’s historic early strike, Havertz’s composed finish and Ødegaard’s authoritative contribution combined to give Arteta a powerful start to the new campaign.

The Community Shield remains a curtain-raiser rather than a measure of an entire season, but Arsenal’s performance will inevitably raise expectations around a team preparing to defend its Premier League crown.

City, meanwhile, have the opportunity to respond when the competitive season progresses.

The scale of Sunday’s defeat, however, means Maresca begins his City tenure with an immediate reminder of the standard required to compete with Arsenal at the summit.

The Arsenal win Community Shield triumph therefore offers Arteta more than an early trophy.
