Arsenal face tough Chelsea test as Spurs struggle

Arsenal and Chelsea put their perfect Premier League starts on the line, while Tottenham seek a much-needed turnaround against Nottingham Forest.

Arsenal will put their perfect start to the Premier League title defence on the line against Chelsea on Sunday, while Tottenham Hotspur travel to Nottingham Forest desperate to halt a worrying slide.

The Gunners are among four teams to have won their opening two league matches, alongside Chelsea, Manchester City and newly promoted Hull City.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have also looked particularly assured defensively, conceding no goals in their first two league games.

Their latest 1-0 victory over Aston Villa followed an emphatic 3-0 opening-day win against Coventry City, giving the defending champions six clean sheets in their last seven league matches.

England winger Bukayo Saka has also provided an encouraging early boost for Arteta after an injury-disrupted 2025/26 campaign.

Saka has already scored twice this season and will be expected to play a key role when Arsenal face Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have made an equally impressive start under new manager Xabi Alonso.

The Blues have won all three of their matches in all competitions since the former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid coach took charge, with their attacking threat already becoming one of the defining features of the new era.

Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers have scored five of Chelsea’s seven Premier League goals in victories over Fulham and Brighton.

Their attacking numbers, however, have been accompanied by defensive concerns, with Chelsea conceding five goals across those two league victories.

That vulnerability could prove costly against an Arsenal side that has developed a reputation for defensive discipline.

History also favours the Gunners heading into Sunday’s encounter, with Chelsea winless in their last nine Premier League meetings with Arsenal.

For Chelsea, the Emirates clash therefore represents an early opportunity to demonstrate whether Alonso’s side can combine attacking flair with the defensive resilience required to challenge for major honours.

Tottenham, meanwhile, face a very different situation.

Spurs are bottom of the Premier League after consecutive defeats to Brentford and Newcastle United, leaving Roberto De Zerbi under pressure to produce an immediate response.

Tottenham opened their campaign with a 3-0 defeat against Brentford before suffering a 2-0 loss to Newcastle.

The results have raised concerns that the club could be heading towards another difficult campaign after finishing 17th in each of the previous two seasons.

Those concerns are particularly striking given Tottenham’s heavy investment during the summer transfer window.

The club spent more than £350 million on new players, with high-profile arrivals including Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Savio.

Yet the spending has so far failed to translate into results, leaving De Zerbi searching for the right formula before Saturday’s trip to Nottingham Forest.

Forest defeated Tottenham twice last season, adding another layer of difficulty to an already important fixture.

Despite the poor start, De Zerbi has maintained confidence in his squad.

“After two defeats, maybe somebody can think it’s the same story, the same as the last two seasons,” the Tottenham manager said.

“I have no doubt it’s not like this. I think I can’t change my opinion after two defeats. I have a big, big confidence in the qualities of my players.”

Liverpool are another major club searching for momentum after an underwhelming opening to the campaign.

New manager Andoni Iraola is still waiting for his first Premier League victory after draws against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.

The champions have also invested heavily in attack, with France winger Bradley Barcola joining from Paris Saint-Germain for a fee that could rise to £124 million.

Barcola could make his Liverpool debut against newly promoted Ipswich Town on Friday.

His arrival adds to an attacking group that already includes Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, although Hugo Ekitike is currently injured.

Liverpool’s biggest concern so far has been at the other end of the pitch, having conceded four goals in their opening two league games.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the squad remains unbalanced despite its attacking strength.

“It does not look like a balanced squad,” Carragher told Sky Sports, pointing to concerns in the full-back positions and midfield.

Iraola, however, believes the end of the transfer window gives his squad greater certainty.

“Once the market is closed, we know who we are,” he said.

“I think we have a lot of talent in this group of players. Now we have to perform, we have to do our job and we have to start from tomorrow.”

With the transfer window now closed, attention turns fully to the pitch.

For Arsenal and Chelsea, Sunday’s meeting offers an early opportunity to establish superiority among the league’s leading contenders.

For Tottenham, Saturday’s visit to Nottingham Forest is about something more immediate: stopping the rot before early-season frustration develops into another prolonged crisis.

The weekend could therefore provide an important indication of whether the Premier League’s early narratives are temporary setbacks or the beginning of much bigger battles.
