Real Madrid defender and Germany international Antonio Rüdiger has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 33, bringing an influential 12-year national-team career to an end after 86 appearances.
Rüdiger confirmed the decision on Tuesday, saying he had reflected carefully before choosing to step aside and give younger players an opportunity to establish themselves in the four-time world champions’ defence.

“After giving it some thought, the time has come for me to bring my international career to a close and make way for the younger generation,” Rüdiger said in a statement shared on social media.
The decision closes a significant chapter for a defender whose Germany career began in 2014, shortly before the national side lifted the World Cup in Brazil.
Rüdiger was not part of Joachim Löw’s travelling squad for that tournament, but went on to become a regular figure in the team over the following decade.
The German Football Association records 86 senior international appearances for Rüdiger, including eight World Cup matches, nine European Championship appearances and four Confederations Cup games.
He scored three goals for Germany.
His most prominent international honour came in 2017, when Germany won the FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. Rüdiger played in all four of Germany’s matches at the tournament, including the 1-0 final victory over Chile.
The defender’s international career also unfolded during a difficult period for Germany.
The team suffered group-stage exits at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, while the 2026 campaign ended much earlier than expected.
Germany entered the 2026 World Cup as group winners but were eliminated by Paraguay in the Round of 32 on June 29.
The match ended 1-1 after extra time before Paraguay prevailed 4-3 on penalties, producing one of the tournament’s most surprising results.
Rüdiger started that final Germany match and played 109 minutes before being replaced, according to match records.
The defeat gave Rüdiger a difficult final image in Germany colours, but it does not define his contribution to the national side.
His career included three World Cups, two European Championships and the 2017 Confederations Cup, as well as more than a decade at the heart of Germany’s defensive transition.
Rüdiger’s decision also reflects the demands of his club career.
The centre-back said his attention would now turn fully towards Real Madrid, where he remains under contract.
“A new chapter begins for me now, in which I will focus entirely on my club,” Rüdiger said.
Rüdiger joined Real Madrid in 2022 after establishing himself at Chelsea, where he won the Champions League in 2021.
At Madrid, he added further major honours, including the Champions League and La Liga titles in 2024.
Before moving to Chelsea, Rüdiger played for VfB Stuttgart and Roma, following his development through the Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund youth systems.
His international retirement comes as Germany prepares for another transition.
The departure of a player with 86 caps leaves space for a younger generation of defenders to take on greater responsibility, while also allowing Rüdiger to manage the demands of elite club football.
For Rüdiger, the decision appears less like a retreat than a deliberate closing of one chapter.
After years of representing Germany through both disappointment and triumph, the defender has chosen to leave the national stage on his own terms and concentrate on the next phase of his career at Real Madrid.

Rüdiger leaves Germany with 86 caps, three international goals and one senior international trophy, but perhaps his most enduring contribution will be the resilience and personality he brought to a national side that spent much of his career searching for a return to the summit of world football.
