On 4 November 2026 in Melbourne, Australia, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, arrived to a grand royal welcome from members of the Yoruba community as he prepared to attend the 30th anniversary celebrations of the Yoruba Heritage and Cultural Association Victoria (YHCAV).

Videos circulating on social media captured the moment of arrival, with traditional displays of respect that left onlookers visibly stunned.

Members of the association, dressed in colourful attire, formed a reception befitting the status of one of Nigeria’s most revered traditional rulers. The monarch, who ascended the throne as the 46th Alaafin earlier in 2026, is in Australia specifically for the milestone event scheduled for Saturday 7 November.

The YHCAV, founded three decades ago, has long served as a platform for promoting Yoruba culture, language, unity and community engagement among the diaspora in Victoria.

Organisers have described the anniversary as a historic occasion, and the presence of the Alaafin himself is widely regarded as a significant honour that underscores the continued strength of Yoruba identity far from home.

One community member wrote: “For 30 years, Yoruba people in Australia have protected our culture, language, food, respect and tradition. And the Alaafin left Oyo to go and tell them: I see you. I am proud of you. That is what a king does.”

The visit also includes other traditional rulers in the monarch’s entourage, reinforcing the cultural and diplomatic importance of the trip.

The warm reception in Melbourne highlights the deep pride felt by the Yoruba diaspora and the enduring relevance of the Alaafin’s institution on the global stage.

Saturday’s anniversary gathering is expected to feature cultural displays, music, dance and networking as the community marks 30 years of preserving its heritage in Australia.
