Osun State Governor Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke received his certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osogbo after winning the August 15 governorship election, formally marking his successful bid to retain the state’s top political office.
The certificate was presented to Adeleke by the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, at about 1:30pm at the commission’s headquarters in Osogbo. Deputy Governor Prince Kola Adewusi received his certificate shortly before Adeleke.

Adeleke, who contested under the platform of the Accord Party, secured 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who polled 444,815 votes.
The 66,252-vote margin gave Adeleke a decisive advantage in an election that had attracted considerable political attention across Osun.
African Democratic Congress candidate Najeem Salaam finished third with 17,180 votes.
Adeleke won in 19 of Osun’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured the remaining 11.
The presentation of the certificate represents an important constitutional step following the declaration of the result and gives formal recognition to the mandate secured by Adeleke and Adewusi.
Babalola said the presentation was conducted in accordance with the electoral laws governing INEC and reflected the choice made by voters during the election.
The REC congratulated the governor and deputy governor while urging Adeleke to approach his renewed mandate with humility.
She also commended voters, security agencies, traditional leaders, civil society organisations and the media for their roles during the electoral process.
Babalola put voter turnout at 43.2 per cent, highlighting the participation of Osun residents despite concerns and tensions surrounding the election.
The ceremony also provided an opportunity for INEC officials to reflect on the wider significance of the poll.
INEC National Supervising Commissioner for Osun State, Professor Kunle Ajayi, described the occasion as significant for democracy and commended residents for participating despite incidents of violence recorded during the build-up to voting.
Ajayi stressed that the commission’s responsibility was to protect the democratic process rather than favour any candidate or political party.
He also praised security agencies for their efforts during the election and recognised the role of party agents in monitoring the process.
The latest development comes as debate continues over the conduct and outcome of the Osun election.
Political figures have offered differing assessments of the contest, particularly regarding campaign spending, electoral security and the influence of political structures.
Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, for instance, recently described President Bola Tinubu as “magnanimous” in allowing the Osun election to proceed without federal interference, while also making unverified claims about spending by the competing parties.
Separately, music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has praised the conduct of young voters during the election and argued that the result demonstrated the importance of citizens’ participation.
The contrasting reactions underline the political significance of Adeleke’s victory beyond the numbers recorded on election day.
For Adeleke, however, Wednesday’s ceremony offered a more definitive moment.
With the certificate formally in his possession, the governor moves from the uncertainty of an election campaign into the responsibility of governing with a renewed mandate.
The 66,252-vote victory gives Adeleke a clear electoral platform, but the appeal from the Osun REC to remain magnanimous in victory also points to the expectations that accompany his return to office.
The governor will now face the task of translating the renewed mandate into policies and programmes capable of addressing the expectations of voters across the state’s 30 local government areas.
The certificate handed to Adeleke in Osogbo therefore represents more than a ceremonial document.

It is a formal confirmation of the electoral outcome and the beginning of a new phase of political responsibility for the governor and his administration.
