Abuja court orders accelerated hearing for six Abuja coup trial suspects facing treason and terrorism charges linked to alleged plot against Tinubu

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, April 28, 2026, ordered an accelerated hearing in the trial of six Abuja coup trial suspects accused of allegedly plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik directed a fast-tracked procedure and fixed April 29, April 30, May 4, and May 5 for commencement of hearing and bail applications in the high-profile case.

The defendants include Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, a retired major-general; Erasmus Ochegobia Victor, a retired navy captain; Ahmed Ibrahim, a police inspector; Zekeri Umoru, an electrician at the Presidential Villa; Bukar Kashim Goni; and Abdulkadir Sani, an Islamic cleric based in Zaria.

They are facing a 13-count charge bordering on treason, terrorism, failure to disclose information, and money laundering. All six defendants pleaded not guilty when the charges were read.

The prosecution, led by Attorney General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), informed the court that witnesses were ready to proceed, subject to the court’s schedule.

However, defence counsel raised concerns over the tight timelines, citing limited preparation time and the complexity of the allegations.

Justice Abdulmalik ruled that the trial would begin before bail applications are considered, stressing the need for swift judicial proceedings.

Court officials, supported by Department of State Services operatives, restricted press access during proceedings, directing journalists to leave the courtroom before the judge entered.

Security presence was heightened as reporters, who arrived early in the morning, were eventually escorted out shortly after proceedings began.

The case is part of wider allegations involving both civilians and military personnel.

The Defence Headquarters confirmed that a separate court martial involving 36 serving officers linked to the alleged plot will resume on May 8.

Former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva, who was mentioned in some counts but not listed as a defendant, is currently said to be at large.

Authorities also indicated that about 40 suspects were initially arrested in connection with the alleged conspiracy.

The dual-track legal process underscores the gravity of the accusations and the scale of the alleged coordinated plot against the Nigerian government.
