Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck on September 10 while speaking at a Utah university as part of his public debate series.
As he departed the White House, Trump described the service as “to celebrate the life of a great man. Really a great man,” adding, “It will be a very interesting day.
A very tough day.” Thousands queued in the pre-dawn hours, many wearing red, white, and blue or Trump’s iconic “Make America Great Again” caps, to honour the founder of Turning Point USA, credited with mobilising young voters in support of Trump.
Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, who will now lead Turning Point USA, also addressed the audience, alongside Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, and conservative figures including Tucker Carlson and Tulsi Gabbard.
Authorities arrested a 22-year-old suspect following a 33-hour manhunt, with prosecutors indicating they will seek the death penalty.
The alleged gunman cited “hatred” he attributed to Kirk’s controversial positions on transgender issues, Muslims, and other groups.

The killing has intensified US political divisions. Trump labelled Kirk “a martyr for truth and freedom” and pledged to designate Antifa as a major terrorist organisation, signalling an intensified crackdown on what his administration terms “domestic terrorism.” Critics warn these moves may suppress dissent amid a politically charged atmosphere.
