DSP Olushola Ayanlade, spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, revealed that Azeez, from Ipele in Owo Local Government Area, orchestrated the scheme after his father refused to lend him money to settle a debt.
“When his request was turned down, he staged his abduction,” Ayanlade said. Azeez reportedly made distress calls claiming he had been kidnapped and instructed that the ransom be transferred directly to his personal bank account a move that initially went unnoticed.
Suspicion arose when his family questioned the unusual payment request, prompting them to alert the police.
Investigators tracked Azeez’s phone and discovered he had remained in Owo throughout the supposed kidnapping. He later confessed to the crime and will face charges once investigations conclude.
Ayanlade warned that the case underscores the dangers of greed and deceit, urging parents to guide their children against moral decay and criminal behavior.
