The King’s Polo Tournament crowned Oonirisa’s birthday celebrations, blending culture, sports, and royalty at Isimi Lagos Festival

The event, held on Saturday, 30th November 2024, at the prestigious Isimi Lagos Festival in Epe, Lagos, was the grand finale of a week-long commemoration of Oonirisa’s life and legacy.
Prominent figures from across Nigeria gathered to celebrate the revered monarch.
Among the dignitaries was the Executive Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who joined other eminent personalities in honouring Oonirisa’s contributions to Yoruba heritage and culture.
The tournament showcased the elegance of polo, symbolising unity and tradition in a spectacular fusion of sport and royal celebration.
The event drew respected monarchs, cultural leaders, and luminaries, underlining the significance of the occasion.
His Majesty, Oba Professor Adeyemi Obalanlege (Lanlege Ekun II, Arole Iganmode), the Olota of Otta Kingdom, Aworiland, attended the special session, representing the enduring legacy of Yoruba culture and celebrating alongside fellow traditional rulers.
The blend of regal traditions with the contemporary sport of polo reflected a harmonious balance, further solidifying the tournament’s place as a cultural milestone.
Prince Adeyemi Sulaimon Olusesi, Principal Secretary to His Majesty and Omotobase of Otta Kingdom, Aworiland, praised the event, stating:
“The King’s Polo Tournament was officially launched as part of the grand finale of Oonirisa’s birthday celebration. It was a remarkable fusion of royalty, culture, and sports in a grand spectacle befitting the occasion. Long may the King reign.”
This year’s celebration brought home the Ooni of Ife’s influence as a unifying figure in Nigeria and his dedication to preserving Yoruba traditions.
The Isimi Lagos Festival, known for its emphasis on sustainability and culture, provided the perfect backdrop for the celebration.
