The 1–0 result in Istanbul marks Liverpool’s first Champions League defeat of the season and raises fresh concerns about their sluggish start under new management, despite an expensive summer rebuild.
Osimhen, who had missed a previous Champions League penalty against Liverpool, converted from the spot after Baris Alper Yilmaz went down under minimal contact from Dominik Szoboszlai — a controversial decision that proved decisive.
Despite resting key names like Mohamed Salah and £125 million signing Alexander Isak, Slot’s much-rotated side showed little cohesion in a first half where Galatasaray exposed Liverpool’s disjointed defence time and again.
“We chose the wrong moments, wrong passes and didn’t act with enough intensity,” Slot admitted post-match.
Szoboszlai was a surprise pick at right-back and the gamble backfired. His stray arm in Yilmaz’s face gifted Galatasaray the penalty, and the Turkish champions capitalised.
Prior to that, Liverpool missed a golden chance when Hugo Ekitike’s attempt was denied and Cody Gakpo’s rebound was cleared off the line.
Galatasaray, fresh off a 5–1 thrashing in Frankfurt, looked a different side on home soil. Their pace on the break and Liverpool’s indecisive defending combined to hand them a vital win.
Florian Wirtz and Ibrahima Konate both missed chances to equalise, with the latter’s continued poor form a worrying trend for Slot.
Konate’s slip early in the second half nearly allowed Osimhen to double the lead, but Alisson saved brilliantly — though the goalkeeper was later forced off injured after a sprint off his line.
Even with Salah and Isak introduced on the hour, Liverpool failed to spark. Isak’s first touch resulted in a weak shot at the keeper, while Salah remained largely peripheral.
Liverpool’s best moment came when referee Clement Turpin initially awarded a penalty for a foul on Konate, only to reverse the decision after VAR review.
Galatasaray almost added a second late on, with Lucas Torreira’s low drive narrowly wide in stoppage time.
This marks Liverpool’s second straight defeat following their weekend loss to Crystal Palace, and only the second time they’ve lost back-to-back under Arne Slot.
