The outrage follows the release of a letter from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, dated 23rd September 2024, which informed private schools of the upcoming October 2024 Integrated Supplemental Immunization Activities (SIAs).
Government’s Immunization Plans Spark Controversy
In the letter, the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board announced the commencement of an immunization campaign aimed at closing gaps in routine vaccinations.
The targeted groups for the campaign include children aged 0-59 months for the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV), children aged 9-59 months for measles, individuals aged 9 months to 44 years for yellow fever, and persons aged 9-14 years for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
The letter stated that vaccination teams would visit schools between 19th October and 2nd November 2024.
The government urged private school associations to grant access to vaccination teams and ensure full compliance, but there was no mention of obtaining parental consent for these immunizations.
Public Backlash on Social Media
Lagosians quickly took to social media to express their frustration.
A user identified as PSHEGS tweeted, “This is ILLEGAL! This is WRONG! Where is Parental Consent?! If you give my child a vaccine in school, I will come and ‘vaccinate’ you my own way. @jidesanwoolu this is illegal!”
The tweet, which gained significant traction, highlighted concerns over the lack of informed parental consent for the mass vaccination campaign.
Another user, Babatunde Gbadamosi, also criticised the government’s actions, suggesting that the campaign was influenced by external forces.
In a tweet, he alleged, “I suspect that the ignorant buffoons in the @followlasg, led by the monumentally obtuse @jidesanwoolu, have collected money from @BillGates’s foot soldiers AGAIN, to STERILISE and/or kill our children…”
Concerns Over Lack of Parental Involvement
Many Lagosians expressed concern that the government bypassed parental consent, which is required for any medical procedure involving children.
Informed consent is considered essential in healthcare, and parents are typically involved in decisions concerning their children’s health.
The controversy is the latest challenge for Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration, raising questions about the government’s approach to public health and its relationship with parents.
What Next for the Immunization Campaign?
While the immunization campaign aims to improve vaccination coverage and protect children from preventable diseases, the government must now address the public’s concerns. Many parents are calling for a halt to the campaign until informed parental consent is obtained.

For now, the Lagos State Government has yet to respond to the backlash, but the controversy continues to grow, with public trust in the process being severely tested.
