At least 21 passengers are feared dead following a tragic boat accident in Imore town, Lagos State, on Monday. The incident occurred when two unregistered boats, each carrying 16 passengers, collided in the middle of the lagoon and capsized.
The Lagos State Police Command, through its spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the tragedy in a press release on Tuesday.
The police received the distress call around 7 pm, prompting the immediate deployment of marine police, local divers, and other emergency responders to the scene.
A total of 11 passengers were rescued with injuries and rushed to the Naval Hospital in Navy Town, Alakija, for urgent medical attention.
The search for the missing passengers continues, as authorities fear that many of them may have drowned.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation, with police working diligently to uncover the circumstances leading to the disaster.
In the meantime, local communities and rescue teams are working tirelessly to recover the remaining bodies from the lagoon.
This tragedy has raised concerns about the safety of passenger boats operating in Lagos State, especially those that are unregistered and often operate without adequate safety measures.
