Lagos Assembly crisis deepens

Security for Lagos Assembly Speaker Mojisola Meranda has been withdrawn amid growing political tension and APC-led intervention

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he leadership crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly shows no signs of easing, as reports emerge that the security details of Speaker Mojisola Meranda were withdrawn on Thursday morning.

Insiders revealed that the withdrawal might be linked to President Bola Tinubu’s reported opposition to Meranda’s speakership.

The development follows the intervention of high-ranking All Progressives Congress (APC) figures, stepping in after the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) failed to resolve the ongoing political tension.

Sources close to the situation disclosed that a powerful delegation, reportedly acting on President Tinubu’s directive, has been tasked with calming the crisis.

Unlike the GAC, this delegation appears more aligned with the President’s position and is keen to implement his recommendations without factoring in potential fallout.

“The GAC members understand the implications of removing Meranda, given that she was the overwhelming choice of House members,” a source said. “Imposing a different leader could spark unending turmoil within the Lagos APC.”

The potential removal of Speaker Meranda could send shockwaves across Lagos’ political landscape.

Insiders warn that her dismissal might trigger unrest the President himself may struggle to contain, given the political and traditional interests she represents.

Meranda’s rise to Speaker followed the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa in January 2025, with 36 out of 40 lawmakers voting for his removal.

The legislators cited Obasa’s poor leadership, habitual lateness, high-handedness, and misappropriation of funds as reasons for his ousting.

Despite his impeachment, Obasa, who was reportedly in Atlanta, United States, at the time, continues to contest his removal, claiming he remains the legitimate Speaker.

As the APC’s intervention unfolds, tensions remain high. The risk of prolonged instability within the Lagos State House of Assembly looms large, with both political and traditional interests at stake.
