Kwara State Police Commissioner, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday, warned persons in possession of illegal firearms to immediately submit them to the nearest police station to avoid arrest and prosecution.
This, according to the spokesman of the command, SP Okasanmi Ajayi, in a statement in Ilorin “is in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on the clampdown on proliferation of prohibited firearms in the country.
“The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State command, CP Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the strict enforcement of the directive in the state.
“Consequently, the CP has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Heads of Tactical Units in the command to immediately put in place measures to identify, isolate, disarm, arrest and prosecute any person or group of persons found in possession of unlawful firearms, particularly prohibited firearms in any part of the state,” the statement added.
The CP further directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, to immediately organise enlightenment programmes for members of the vigilante groups and other local security outfits within their areas of responsibility on the need to co-operate within the ambit of the laws guiding their establishment and operations in the state.

Also, the Area Commanders and DPOs, are to send the returns of the programmes to the office of the CP as soon as the directive is complied with.
The statement urged residents in Kwara State to remain law-abiding, vigilant and promptly report any person or group of persons in possession of unlawful or prohibited firearms, or call the command’s hotline – 08125275046.
