Jeriq music crime story reveals how the Nigerian rapper says music kept him away from vices and prison, shaping his journey to success

Nigerian rapper Jeremiah Chukwuebuka Ani, professionally known as Jeriq, said music played a decisive role in keeping him away from crime and prison, revealing that he was arrested several times before his career gained momentum.

Speaking during an interview with YouTuber The Smallie, the Enugu-born artiste said encounters with law enforcement marked his early life, but music ultimately redirected his path.

Jeriq said he had been arrested by various security agencies, including the police and anti-cultism units, adding that the experience left physical scars from handcuffs on his hands and legs.

The rapper described music as a powerful lifeline, saying that without it, his story might have taken a far darker turn.

Jeriq music crime experiences, he said, shaped his discipline and focus, allowing him to channel his energy into creativity rather than destructive behaviour.

The rapper also reflected on the challenges he faced while trying to establish himself in Lagos, Nigeria’s entertainment hub.

He said his first attempt to break into the city’s music scene was marked by rejection and limited access to established artistes.

At the time, Jeriq explained, his lack of visibility made collaborations difficult, forcing him to return and regroup before making another attempt.

That turning point came in 2021, when Jeriq returned to Lagos with renewed momentum and secured a collaborative extended play project with rapper Dremo, titled East and West.

The project significantly boosted his profile and widened his audience.

Jeriq said his confidence has continued to grow since then, particularly in his decision to rap primarily in Igbo, his native language.

The rapper expressed strong belief that language would not limit his reach, insisting that authenticity and cultural identity could drive international success.

His remarks offer a stark glimpse into the realities many young artistes face and underline music’s transformative power in steering lives away from crime and towards purpose.
