The Federal Government has lifted the ban on mining activities in Zamfara State, ending a five-year restriction imposed due to insecurity.
Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, made this announcement on Sunday, noting that improved security in the state has made the decision possible.
“The security threats that led to the 2019 ban have significantly reduced, thanks to coordinated operations that have neutralized key bandit commanders,” Alake said. He highlighted the capture of notorious bandit leader Halilu Sububu as a testament to the government’s efforts to restore peace.
Zamfara, rich in gold, lithium, and copper, holds significant economic potential. Alake stressed that the lifting of the ban would enable regulated mining, curb illegal operations, and ensure the nation benefits from the state’s mineral wealth.
The minister commended the media for their role in promoting mining reforms and assured that the government remains committed to fostering an investor-friendly environment in the sector.
