The announcement, regarded as a significant Niger Delta boost for regional sport, was made in the presence of Governor Monday Okpebholo, NDDC Managing Director Dr Stanley Ogbuku, Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa and senior state and Commission officials.
Dr Ogbuku said Edo State was chosen deliberately for the 2026 edition because its existing facilities would allow organisers to deliver a smooth and enjoyable tournament.
He added that the NDDC would rehabilitate additional sports infrastructure in Benin City as part of its preparations.
He noted that similar upgrades were executed in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, for the inaugural Games in April 2025, including improvements to the Uyo Township Stadium, the restoration of the swimming complex and the refurbishment of the track at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
The event drew more than 3,000 athletes and 500 technical officials, generating an economic surge for the host state.
Governor Okpebholo said Edo State would provide an enabling environment for athletes and officials while competing strongly to win the tournament.
He described the state’s sporting heritage as an advantage and pledged that a stronger squad would represent Edo compared with the team fielded at the previous edition.
Project Consultant Sir Itiako Ikpokpo highlighted the Games’ original purpose, explaining that they were conceived to develop a new generation of athletes from the Niger Delta to succeed an older cohort that had long brought honour to Nigeria.
He commended the NDDC for embracing the vision and supporting youth development through sport.
