The decision affects both public and private institutions in the district and comes after violent protests over frequent kidnappings in the area.
Last week’s demonstration in Ekpoma, headquarters of Esan West Local Government Area, left several people injured and saw the vandalism of the palace of the town’s traditional ruler.
Reports also indicated looting of shops, disrupting commercial activities.
Confirming the closure, Commissioner for Education Dr. Paddy Iyamu said schools would remain closed until further notice.
“The new date of resumption will be duly communicated to the public in due course,” Iyamu stated.
“Parents, guardians, and all education stakeholders within Edo Central Senatorial District are kindly requested to take note of this development and comply accordingly.”
The government said the suspension aims to safeguard students and address pressing security concerns in the affected communities.
