Fusengbuwa submits candidates, Awujale race nears end

The Awujale stool succession advances as the Fusengbuwa Ruling House submits qualified names to Ijebu kingmakers in Ogun State

The Fusengbuwa Ruling House on Monday formally submitted a list of qualified princes and a princess for the Awujale stool succession, signalling a decisive step towards filling the vacant throne of Ijebuland.

The submission was led by the Chairman and Head of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Otunba Abdulateef Owoyemi, alongside senior members of the family.

They presented the names to the kingmakers through the Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuland, Olorogun Sunny Kuku.

The ceremony took place at the Awujale’s Palace in Ijebu-Ode, drawing traditional leaders and observers from the local government.

According to established procedure, the kingmakers are expected to select a preferred candidate from the list.

The chosen name will then be forwarded to the Ogun State Government through the Ijebu-Ode Local Government and the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for approval.

The Awujale stool succession attracted wide interest within the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, with no fewer than 90 princes and one princess emerging as contestants.

The contestants were nominated during a family meeting held at Bisrod Hall, GRA, Ijebu-Ode.

Otunba Owoyemi presided over the meeting, supported by his deputy, Prince Adedokun Ajidagba, and the Vice Chairman, Professor Fassy Yusuf.

Officials of the Ijebu-Ode Local Government, including the Secretary, Abiodun Oke, attended the meeting as observers, lending credibility to the process.

Only one female aspirant, Princess Oluwakemi Onanuga, indicated interest in the revered throne, a development regarded by observers as notable.

The Awujale stool became vacant in July last year following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who passed away at 91 after a remarkable 65-year reign as Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.

At the nomination meeting, each aspirant was represented by two relatives.

One formally moved the motion for nomination, while the other seconded it, after which the family registered the nomination as accepted, completing a transparent and orderly process.
