The Brazilian centre-back sustained a hamstring injury during Arsenal’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Fulham on Tuesday and will require surgery.
The 27-year-old, a pivotal figure in Arsenal’s defence, was forced to leave the pitch in the 16th minute at the Emirates Stadium.
His absence will be keenly felt as Arsenal prepare to host Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday, followed by the return fixture the following week.
“Further to being substituted during our match against Fulham on Tuesday, we can confirm that Gabriel Magalhães has sustained a hamstring injury which requires surgery,” Arsenal confirmed in a statement released on Thursday.
“Gabi will undergo a surgical repair procedure to his hamstring in the coming days, and immediately begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme, to be ready for the start of next season.”
Gabriel’s absence is a considerable blow to Arsenal’s defensive stability. The Gunners boast the best defensive record in the Premier League this season, having conceded just 25 goals in 30 matches.
However, they currently sit second in the league table, trailing runaway leaders Liverpool by a substantial 12 points with only eight games remaining.
The timing of the injury could not be worse for Arsenal, who are now faced with the challenge of navigating a crucial phase of their season without one of their key players.

The focus now shifts to how manager Mikel Arteta will restructure the defence to cope with Gabriel’s absence, both in the Champions League and the remaining Premier League fixtures.
