ARCON sanctions Bokku Supermarket ads over offensive, unapproved content that breached Nigeria’s advertising ethics and national unity policy

Lagos, 4 November 2025 — The ARCON sanctions Bokku Supermarket ads saga has stirred national debate after Nigeria’s advertising regulator denounced the retailer’s controversial social media campaign as offensive, unapproved, and contrary to national values.

In a strongly worded statement, Dr Olalekan Fadolapo, Director-General of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), described the now-viral advertisements as “unlawful, divisive, and contrary to Nigeria’s national values.”

According to the regulator, the campaign materials allegedly promoted ethnic prejudice and ridicule, targeting a section of the population in a way that violated the Federal Government’s policy on unity and peaceful coexistence.

ARCON confirmed that the Bokku Supermarket advertisements were not submitted to its Advertising Standards Panel (ASP) for vetting or approval, as required by law.

“These advertisements were neither vetted nor approved for exposure,” said Dr Fadolapo. “They clearly breach ethical standards and pose a serious threat to social harmony.”

The Council reiterated that no advertisement may be exposed to the public in Nigeria without prior ASP approval — a safeguard intended to ensure that all advertising content is truthful, decent, legal, and socially responsible.

ARCON warned that it would pursue sanctions and possible legal redress against the advertisers, agencies, and platform owners involved in the dissemination of the offending content.

“ARCON will take all necessary steps, including sanctions and legal redress, to enforce compliance,” the statement read.

In a move signalling intensified oversight, the Council also announced the activation of a special monitoring and enforcement task force to identify and clamp down on unapproved advertisements across print, broadcast, outdoor, and digital platforms.

The controversy has reignited debate about regulatory oversight in Nigeria’s fast-growing digital advertising space, where brands frequently bypass official vetting procedures.

ARCON’s latest action underscores its determination to rein in unethical and unverified advertising, especially on social media platforms where misinformation and cultural insensitivity can spread rapidly.

Industry observers note that the regulator’s firm stance reflects a broader effort to align Nigeria’s advertising ecosystem with international standards of ethics, social responsibility, and inclusivity.

As the ARCON sanctions Bokku Supermarket ads case unfolds, the development serves as a reminder to advertisers and agencies alike that creative freedom must operate within the bounds of law, ethics, and respect for public decency.
