The accident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. near Danco Filling Station, before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound axis of the highway, when a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua reportedly collided with a stationary truck under circumstances still being investigated.
The Lexus SUV, bearing registration number KRD 850 HN, was part of a two-vehicle convoy, with a Mitsubishi Pajero carrying security personnel following behind, eyewitnesses said.
An eyewitness and first responder, Adeniyi Orojo, said Joshua was seated behind the driver at the time of the collision.
“It was a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Anthony Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another passenger beside him and another beside the driver. His security detail was in the vehicle behind,” Orojo said.
“After the crash, other eyewitnesses and I began rescue efforts and flagged down vehicles for assistance. A few minutes later, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived. Two passengers in the Lexus died on the spot, while Joshua sustained injuries and was rescued.”
Emergency responders from the Federal Road Safety Corps later took control of the scene, while traffic was temporarily disrupted as rescue operations and vehicle recovery were carried out.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased, pending notification of their families.
Attempts to reach the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE)** Commandant, Akinbiyi Babatunde, for official confirmation were unsuccessful as of press time.
News of the crash sparked an immediate reaction on social media, with fans across Nigeria and abroad expressing concern for the boxer and sympathy for the victims’ families.
