The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully rescued a retired Shell Petroleum Company worker who was abducted by armed men on June 17, 2024.
The 63-year-old victim, whose name has been withheld, was held captive by four armed men dressed in military camouflage.
According to ASP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer, the rescue operation was conducted following intelligence gathered by the command. The victim was found unharmed in Ikot Udobong village, Etim Ekpo local government area. During the operation, the police engaged the kidnappers in a gun battle, resulting in one suspect sustaining fatal gunshot wounds. The injured suspect later succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital.
John stated, “Preliminary investigations revealed that the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of ₦50 million, which was later negotiated down to ₦20 million. However, no ransom was paid before the victim’s rescue. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects who fled the scene.”
CP Waheed Ayilara, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, commended the SWAT operatives for their swift action and reiterated the command’s dedication to combating crime in the state. He urged residents to report any suspicious activities or individuals to the police through designated emergency lines or nearby police stations.
