The announcement came during a joint press conference held by President Tinubu and his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in Brasília.

According to presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, the move is part of a broader set of bilateral agreements aimed at enhancing economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations.

“Increasing the direct connections between Nigeria and Brazil is another essential step to strengthen the ties between our societies Lula stated.

The direct route—Lagos to São Paulo—will be operated by Nigeria’s largest airline, Air Peace providing a vital link between West Africa and South America for trade, tourism, and diplomacy.

The formal signing of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) was conducted by Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus  Keyamo, and Brazil’s Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Filhos

In a show of deepening foreign cooperation, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, also signed an agreement on Diplomatic Training Cooperation with Brazil’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Mauro Vieira

This development not only positions  Air Peace as a continental leader in aviation connectivity but also represents a strategic leap forward in South-South cooperation.

As trade, education, and cultural ties continue to expand, this new route is expected to serve as a powerful bridge linking two of the world’s largest Black populations and unlocking new economic opportunities for both countries.
